Tasman Mill

Kawerau,
North Island, New Zealand

The Tasman Mill, located just outside the town of Kawerau in the Bay of Plenty region of New Zealand, is one of the largest pulp and paper facilities in the world.

In 2004, Pedersen Group took over operation and maintenance of the logyard and chipmill at CHH Tasman Puplmill. Within just one year, Pedersen Group delivered significant savings to CHH; and demonstrated considerable gains – including a 150% increase in main Log Yard capacity, 36% reduction in overthicks and pins and 114% increase in chip accepts.

“(Pedersen Group) management and staff have been outstanding in performing their duties and responsibilities, improving processes and operations in many areas.”

Pedersen Group currently handles log volumes of 1,100,000 tonnes per annum at the Kawerau site, undertaken on a seven day, double shifted operation.

In 2006, Pedersen Group entered into a Preferred Supplier Agreement for the CHH Tasman Mill operation (and indeed for all CHH sites in New Zealand and Australia) – providing log yard services, mobile plant services, whole log chipping services, log debarking and hogging services. From forest to mill, Pedersen is there every step of the way.

Also in 2006, Pedersen Group became the provider of chipping services at Tasman Mill to Norske Skog Tasman Limited (NSTL). Incurring a capital cost of over $2 million dollars, Pedersen Group designed, developed and purpose-built a 142-metre chip conveyor, suspended 22 metres in the air, to efficiently deliver chip to the NSTL chip pad.

This is but one example of how the Pedersen Group can provide specific capital and operational solutions to meet our customer’s requirements, solutions that are as diverse as the sites for which they are designed.

Since the partnership began, Pedersen Group has delivered considerable gains to Norske Skog Tasman Ltd, through an improved accepts strike rate driven by an improved chip quality.
